Summertime Pet Safety Tips

Avoid Hot Surfaces

If you can’t walk barefooted on the HOT asphalt or the SCORCHING sand, NEITHER CAN YOUR PET.

Avoid hot surfaces like:

  • Asphalt
  • Concrete 
  • Sand
Hot Asphalt awareness! Air temps of 77 degrees equal an asphalt temp of 125! Skin destruction can hapeen in 60 seconds.

Keep Your Pet Hydrated

Keep your pet well-hydrated. Refill water bowls more often and add ice cubes to cool down your pet.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Prevent overheating by keeping your pets in the shade, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Keep a watchful eye for heatstroke and if possible keep your pets inside.

Signs of Heatstroke include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Weakness
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Dark Red Gums
  • Incoordination
  • Rapid Heart Beat
  • Seizures

Avoid Hot Cars

Pets die in hot cars. Even with the windows cracked, vehicles can reach temperatures over 130 degrees. Leave your pets at home, if possible.

Dog inside car with outside temperature 68 degrees, in car after 10 minutes 81 degrees, and 115 degrees after 60 minutes

Monitor Swimming in the Ocean

Monitor and limit your pets time in the water if swimming in the ocean. Too much salt water can cause:

  • dehydration
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
