The Town of Kitty Hawk contracts with Dare County for its garbage collection.
Town of Kitty Hawk Garbage Collection Schedule & Requirements
Garbage Collection is scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays year-round throughout the town. From Memorial to Labor Day, there is a Saturday trash collection for residential properties east of HWY 158 (beachside).
Garbage is often collected very early in the morning, so please roll your can to the right-of-way by midnight the day before collection day. Please roll your can back to your house after collection.
Holiday Trash Collection
When there is a holiday it sometimes changes trash collection days for you. Please check the local newspapers and this website for collection information.

Garbage Cans for Rental Properties
Weekly or daily rental properties are required to have at least two (2) garbage cans on site. If two cans are not enough, the public works director can require rental houses to have more garbage cans.
You must purchase any additional cans through Dare County and can call (252) 475-5895 for information on additional cans.
Garbage Placement
No trash should be placed on top of or around your can in the right-of-way. The garbage trucks are fully automated and cannot pick up anything outside the garbage can.
On-Demand Large Item Pick Up Service
Please note On-Demand Large Item Pick Up Service has ended for the summer season and will resume in September 2025.
The Town of Kitty Hawk Public Works Department is now offering on-demand large item pick-up. This service was suspended for the summer months.
The pick-up is available to all residential properties up to four times per year.

Curbside Recycling
Outer Banks Hauling provides voluntary curbside recycling service for residential customers. Contact Outer Banks Hauling at 252-491-5105 for more information.
The recycle collection day is currently Monday.
Recycling Center
The Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center located at 4190 Bob Perry Road, operates from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
The recycling is open on Saturday from 8:00 AM until 12 PM. It is closed on Wednesdays, Sundays, and some Town Holidays.
The center is staffed daily to assist you in unloading and directing you to the correct disposal location.
