Burning Regulations in Kitty Hawk
Residents and visitors are required to follow these guidelines when burning within the Town limits. Please contact the Town Fire Department at (252) 261-2666 with additional questions.
Beach Fires
It shall be unlawful for any person to ignite, cause to be ignited, or maintain a fire on the ocean beaches within the town.
Fires in Other Areas of the Town
Allowed burning must be natural material such as:
- Grass Clippings
- Tree Limbs
- Untreated wood products
- Charcoal
Fires Allowed Without a Permit
- Enclosed in containers, including burn barrels, non-combustible fire pits-either homemade or commercial
- Fires used for cooking
- Small campfires at a designated campground
Fires Requiring a Permit
- Open pit fires
- Burning of yard debris, not in an enclosure
*All open burning must be between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM
Fire Permit Requirements
- Fire can be no larger than 2 feet in height and 3 feet around
- Wind speed must be less than 10 mph
- Fire cannot be within 50 feet of a structure
- Must be constantly attended with a water hose and rake or shovel
