Project Life-Saver

The Kitty Hawk Police Department participates in Project Lifesaver, the premier search and rescue program operated internationally by public safety agencies, and strategically designed for “at risk” individuals who are prone to the life-threatening behavior of wandering. The primary mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely responses to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children with the propensity to wander due to a cognitive condition.

Ride Along Program

The Kitty Hawk Police Department Ride Along Program allows community members the opportunity to see an officer’s experiences in a typical day on the job. Participation in the Ride Along Program is limited to residents of Kitty Hawk, employees working for businesses within Kitty Hawk, applicants, and on occasion those who apply for consideration with a special purpose, i.e., students, and community leaders.

Interested persons, 18 and older, should submit a Ride Along Application and consent to a limited background investigation. You are welcome to ride during the day or at night. Stay for a few hours or the whole shift.

Participants in this program are limited to one ride along within a 12 month period.

A waiver of liability is required for each ride.

Hiring an Off-Duty Officer

The Kitty Hawk Police Department authorizes its Police Officers to provide law enforcement-related services outside of an employee’s normal work hours, and secondary employment, in exchange for a fee paid by the employer.

This may include Police Officers assigned to special events, traffic control, business or construction site security, or special escorts. Kitty Hawk Police Officers do not arrange their own secondary employment, as all job requests are screened and assigned by the Kitty Hawk Police Department.

Secondary employment that can be interpreted to be inconsistent with or in conflict with the interests of the Town or the department will not be approved. Depending on staffing levels and other scheduled commitments at the time of your application, this office does not guarantee that secondary employment positions will be provided or filled.

To hire an off-duty officer complete the attached forms and submit them to administrationpd@kittyhawknc.gov.

Project Child Safe Gun Locks

Project Child Safe is a nationwide program aimed at promoting gun safety and reducing gun-related accidents, especially those involving children. The initiative, which is often partnered with local law enforcement agencies, provides free gun locks to gun owners to help prevent unauthorized access to firearms and promote safe storage practices.

Free gun locks may be picked up in the Kitty Hawk Police Department lobby.

Governor’s Highway Safety Program

The Patrol Division participates in statewide Governor’s Highway Safety Programs such as “Booze It and Lose It”, “Click It or Ticket” and “No Need 2 Speed”. The safety of the community and visitors on the roadways are a primary focus.

Vehicle Lock-Out Service

Locked your keys in your vehicle? We can help. Contact the Dare County Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Center non-emergency number at (252) 473-3444 and they will dispatch an officer to your location. Officers are able to get into most makes/years of vehicles.

Operation Medicine Drop

Operation Medicine Drop is a public safety initiative aimed at providing a safe, convenient way for people to dispose of unused, expired, or unwanted prescription medications. The goal is to prevent drug misuse, reduce the risk of accidental poisonings, and protect the environment by keeping medications out of waterways and landfills. There is a medication drop box in the Kitty Hawk Police Department lobby.
